Question: Are there links that can actually decrease PageRank?
Answer:
Yes! Google recommend that you avoid linking to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

Question: Should I use the to preserve PageRank?
Answer:
That depends on where you stand in the argument. We know that the attribute was introduced by the search engines to help combat blog comment spam. i.e. Stop PageRank being passed onto sites that post links in blog comments. It is also a fact that search engines use mathematical algorithms to calculate PageRank and rank webpages. I'm not a mathematician, and I don't understand most of the mathematical calculations that other experts have presented. But PageRank leakage seems logical to me. After all, if the reason for using the attribute is to cap PageRank being passed on, then I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that there's more PageRank being distributed by the other links on the page that don't contain the attribute.

Question: What are text links?
Answer:
A text link is a text hyperlink that typically links to another online document, such as a webpage, PDF file, video, Excel spreadsheet, etc. Text links can also point to another location on the same page. The hyperlinks are typically underlined and highlighted in blue for unvisited links and purple for visited links. Internet users travel from one document to another by clicking on the links. Here are some examples of the underlying HTML code for a text link: homepage Google

Question: What is link popularity?
Answer:
Link popularity is a measure of the number of links pointing to a webpage, without any regard for the quality of the links.

Question: What is link quality?
Answer:
Link quality refers to the quality of a link which takes into account a number of factors, including the importance (i.e. PageRank) of the linking webpage, the relevance of the anchor text, and whether the linking webpage is of the same topic as the link destination.

Question: What is link relevancy?
Answer:
Link relevancy refers to getting relevant sites to link to yours. Here's what the Google Webmaster Guidelines recommends, and I quote: When your site is ready: # Have other relevant sites link to yours Sounds obvious, right? Top ranked sites have hundreds, if not thousands, of links to their site. How many does yours have?

Question: What is PageRank?
Answer:
Google's PageRank system uses the Web's vast link structure as an indicator of a webpage's value. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote for page B, by page A. Aside from the number of links a page receives, Google also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." PageRank is measured on a scale from 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest. Important sites receive a higher PageRank. However, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. As such Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to a search query.
